2014 Shelby GT500: They Don't Make 'Em Like This Anymore

And they probably won't make them like this much longer.

When I was making a list of eight alternate sports cars you could buy for the same $65,500 it’d cost to buy the perfect 2014 Corvette Stingray, I touched on competitors from Dodge, Porsche, even a Ferrari—but somehow, I missed out on this car. A fact that became brutally obvious the moment I pulled out the window sticker tucked into the glovebox of the 2014 Shelby GT500 and looked at the pricetag: $65,470. And it set me to thinking: Honestly, if I had $65,500 to spend on a new car, today, which would I buy? The Corvette, or the Mustang?

Next SVT Ford Mustang Could Lose Shelby Name, Blown V8

So buy your 662 horsepower Mustangs now, folks.

Can we make a little confession, folks? Well, we're gonna, anyway: the 5.8 liter supercharged Shelby GT500 may be one of our favorite new cars. Because it's just so insane, you can't not love it.

Epic Shelby GT500 Dyno Fail Is Good For A Laugh (w/Video)

Assuming nobody was hurt. Otherwise, that just seems mean.

Running a car on a dynamometer involves tricking said car into thinking it's running along at high rate of speed when it's actually standing still—which, in turns, involves getting the rear wheels spinning very quickly.

Just call it the Las Vegas Tire Fire.

A few months back, we had the chance to take Ford's 2013 Shelby GT500 out for a spin. It turned out to be so much fun that we had to ask for it for a second weekend. Not because it handles well, not because it's particularly comfortable—but simply because, with 662 horsepower and 631 lb-ft of torque, it is utterly, insanely, hilariously overpowered.

Story: Michael Crenshaw and Will Sabel Courtney

We're lucky enough to drive a lot of new cars every year. One of the perks of the job. (Actually, the biggest perk of the job.) So this year, we thought we'd celebrate what's been a good year in fun cars by compiling a list of our 10 favorite vehicles we drove this year. Which then escalated to 12 cars. Then 15. Then, ultimately, 18. We could have done more, but we had to draw the line somewhere, and it is the week before Christmas, so we've had a lot to do.

Anyway, please click through the gallery above and enjoy at your leisure. Happy holidays to all of you, and thanks for being such loyal fans of 0-60! We appreciate it more than you know.
