Block Vs. Loeb
Epic showdown, or not so much?
Sébastien Loeb does Gymkhana now? Here’s some recent footage of rally champion Loeb participating in a Red Bull sponsored gymkhanaesqe event down in Argentina over the weekend. We’ll keep our thoughts to ourselves for now, but it sure does seem like Loeb is following in the footsteps of a certain very popular video released by Ken Block not too long ago.
So what do you guys think, Loeb versus Block, who would come out on top?

I think Redbull needs to quit riding coat tails.
Can’t wait to see the new shiny overproduced version of this clip with Loeb looking into the camera and saying something kooky like “This is my world”… Ya gonna have to do better than that boys!

Well, Gymkhana is nothing really that new…it’s been done in Europe for half a century. I’m sure Loeb would hold his own against Ken, and vice versa

Oh come on now, give the guy some credit. It was a demo/exhibition. Loeb was surely paid handsomely by Red Bull, “Hey, go tear up this course thingy and make every cheer.” Loeb has ZERO NEED to remotely try to “follow” in the footsteps of Ken Block. I like KB and the Gymkhana video as much as the next guy, and am far from a fanboy of anyone … but Loeb vs. Block? That’s a serious question? Stop hating (which you as much indicated passively).

Malcolm smith says:
Let`s see… Loeb = French Rally Champion. Junior World Rally champion. 5 time World Rally Champion. Most successful rally driver in history. Only non Scandinavian to win the Swedish Rally. Block = Decent driver that likes to jump things with a rally car. To compare the two is like comparing Apples and Peanuts. No ofense to Block, but there are probably 200 under-funded drivers in Finland alone that can teach him a thing or two. Loeb is a Rally champion, Block is a performer.

AC says:
Ah… Does Block get to keep his hollywood photography and editing? BTW that type of Rally car exhibition has been going on long before Ken Block.

Lew Man says:
@Malcolm smith…. 100% agreed. Sorry but Mr Block needs to do a bit more than have success in America before he can be compared to Loeb. Only the biggest of Block fanboys could entertain the idea. And even then, if they are serious fans of motorsport, they would see that Block doesn’t stand a chance of finishing anywhere near Loeb over the course of a full WRC event. Yep, someone must have been really bored to come up with this comparison.

I think Jeff made some good points, but all this hating on Ken Block is just ridiculous. KB is simply passionate about the sport he participates in. For him to make a video (however edited and staged as it may be) to promote his race discipline of choice is awesome. I’m pretty sure its a success its almost up to 5 million views. There’s no need to belittle him, he’s done more for rally than most professional drivers do for there sport.

Block is a wanker, like a complete ass of a wanker. Jacking off in public like a godamn monkey. Loeb, a world champ, not even worth a a thought. just look at Blocks “pwrc” attempts, what a tourist!!!! wanker, soon his ching will be gone and with it, him

Very cool.
Nice to see Ken mentioned in an article along with Sebastien. As others stated - this is just a demo in the street - with a car not set up for gymkhana. Comparing the two posted videos . . . Ken hands down.
If they were both in equal cars doing proper gymkhana - I think Ken could hold his own. No question. Ken needs to add a jump to his next gymkhana day!

tough to compare, Loeb is in a restricted WRCar where Ken is driving a wide open Sube, they are both impressive and great driving by both drivers.

KLBO says:
I would have to give this one to Sébastien Loeb. Let’s remember that Ken Blocks video spent a lot of time in the editing department. Loeb’s video was raw, unedited and pure skill. I’m not stating that Ken Block isn’t a talented driver, but Sébastien Loeb’s driving skills by far more superior. Just a quick note, in 2008 wrc season out of 15 events Sébastien Loeb finished 1st 11 times. In the same year, Ken Block finished 1st 3 out of 9 events in Rally America, and DNF 4 times. I highly doubt Sébastien Loeb would want to be following in Ken Block’s footsteps. If anything Ken Block would want to follow Sébastien Loeb’s winning trail. Yes, Ken Block came out with the coolest gymkhana video first that would impress anyone, therefore any other gymkhanaesqe will always be looked at as copying Ken Block. But lets remember, these gymkhanaesqe events have been happening in Europe for a very long time now. So if anything Ken Block copied it from the gymkhanaesqe drivers, but Ken just spend a lot more money and a lot more time editing to make his video a lot cooler to watch.

Steve says:
As has already been said I think thats a pretty unfair comparison. Loeb is a multiple national and international rally champion, Block has been rallying for about 5 minutes. Block can definately drive, but he’s not in the same league as Loeb. Rally and performance car demonstrations have been happening in Europe for years (check out UK Driver Terry Grant), Blocks video just upped the budget and production of such demonstrations. Oh, and as much as I love the Gymkhana video, Loebs demo there was filmed in ONE TAKE with NO EDITING in a car with over 200 BHP less than Blocks Gymkhana car. Go figure.

stephen allison says:
loeb is by far better than block, the gymkhana practice was attended over a number of times and edited to look like if it was just one take. he’s really not a good rally driver if he needs 500 brake at the road wheels to over steer a vehicle.

Jeff says:
stephen-c : Ken Block is not a “stunt” driver. Please do more research. And you don’t know what kind of ego he has or not. In interviews, the guy is very humble and down to earth. I don’t think I’ve EVER heard him say a SINGLE bad thing about anyone else, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard him boast of himself. It’s a shame you’ll likely never see this comment, too, and will continue armchair stereotyping Americans for some reason.

sheri says:
i am relatively new to paying attention to this, but Ken Block does drive professionally unless you consider Rally-America to not be professional… I enjoyed both these videos, while I know that Ken’s is edited, it is absolutely a more impressive video, especially if you don’t know what to look for (to catch editing glitches). It is aggravating that so many people are knocking him, because he is doing something great for the sport, by making people know about it in America, which Loeb is also doing as well in other countries.

Loeb owns all. If Block wants to compete with the big boys, he needs to step up to WRC. Until then he will only be known for throwing money at doing donuts in parking lots and on runways, and a lackluster stateside rally career.

Loeb. That’s a capital Watch WRC events from the past couple years and you’ll see that the guy is simple amazing. Very few mistakes and he just dominates. If Ken was anywhere near as good he’d be in a WRC drive. He’s certainly got he $$$ to get himself in there. Not taking anything away from Ken Block but what he does and what Loeb does are two entirely different things. Granted, Ken Block does do Rally America but I have a funny feeling that it’s not the same caliber as WRC. I’d love to be proven wrong though

Loeb is a amazing and talented driver. But like everyone else say. The 2 do not compare. I enjoy watching both get their work done, cause they both have different drving styles. Loeb obviously has experience out the ass, but block has come very far in such a little time. Block can entertain and thats what he wants to do. If I had to choose though it would be block..I find he is more aggressive, and precise! also he drives a 500 hp crawford performance subaru..wtf a citroen..(kidding)

I think Red Bull needs to give Loeb a cooler car than that Citroen if he’s going to compete for Youtube time with Block and his sweet STI’s” …that Citroen has won the last 6 driver’s WORLD championship titles! The majority of the time to the point where that Loeb wouldn’t have had to race the last few events and still win the title. How much “cooler” can that car be? I see Subaru advertising has worked on you!
