From what we’ve heard, the six-speed manual gearbox BMW has fitted to the new M5 is, well, not quite as well-matched to the car as the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that is the sole choice outside of the U.S. and Canada. But we still love it, and we’d probably buy our M5 with it, because damn it, it’s a true manual—and $100,000 sport sedans (or any sort of sports car, actually) with row-your-own-way sticks are a dying breed.
So we were glad to hear this morning that BMW, for the 2014 model year, will be offering the six-speed stick in all three M6 models as well—coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe. The new transmission includes automatic rev matching in EFFICIENT and SPORT modes, though the feature kicks off when you pop the car into SPORT+. So you still ought to work on your heel-toe action.
