The BMW 1 Series M is one of our favorite little cars—and we’re hardly alone in that assessment. The teeny Bimmer had grunt for days, was as tossable as a baseball, and looked just badass enough to scare away poseurs in tuned Civics while not drawing too much attention to itself. Unfortunately, it only lasted a single year in the U.S. market, with only around 2,700 examples built for the entire world’s seven billion human residents.
Now, you do have some options if you’re craving a replacement. You could pick up a new 135is coupe, which splits the already-short distance between where the 135i is and where the 1M was. You could grab a used 1 Series M, if you can find one (the only one we could find on sale was a modded one in Germany for $110,000), or you could wait around a couple years for the M135i to make its way to American shores. Or…you could just shove a Formula One-inspired V10 under the hood of a 1 Series and call it a day.
That’s pretty much what TJ Fahrzeugdesign has done with the car you see above. It’s your basic 1 Series coupe, outfitted with a wide body kit to give it that 1M-like appeal, and given a high-revving 5.0 liter V10 sourced from the E60 M5. An ECU reflash has bumped the power to roughly 540 horses; with all that power flowing to the rear 20″ wheels through the E60 M5′s sequential manual gearbox, TJ Fahrzeugdesign says the car rips from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 202 mph.
It’s not just a motor mod, however. TJ outfitted the car with the giant brakes from the X6 M to help bring the speed down, and KW whipped up a suspension for it that should give it handling that’ll let it keep up with its 1M brother in the corners. The whole conversion costs about €20,000—roughly $26,000—and takes about 350 hours to complete. We’re guessing the only way to bring one over is through show-and-display laws, but hey, odds are good nobody else at Bimmerstock will have one of these. [via WorldCarFans]
