According to Porsche, the new Boxster S has cracked off a lap of the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife in two seconds less than eight minutes. If anybody was doubting how quickly the goalposts are moving in the sports car world, consider this yet another piece of evidence that shows just how capable cars are becoming.
First of all, a lap time of 7 minutes and 58 seconds means the 315 horsepower, 2,976 pound Boxster S spanks some pretty impressive company. Cars like the Audi R8 4.2 (8:04), the Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series (8:02), and the Cadillac CTS-V and C6 Corvette with Z51 package (7:59 for both) will all be left sucking the 981-generation Boxster S’s dust…not to mention the last-gen Boxster, which laps the ‘Ring in 8:10.
But even more impressive than the cars the Boxster S beats is the list of cars it almost beats. The Ferrari F430 (7:55). The Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 (7:52). Just think about that for a second: Porsche’s latest Boxster has performance potential on the level of the last generation of super sports cars. That’s absurd.
Oh, and the Boxster S might cause a little competition within Porsche’s own camp. Its pace puts it only two seconds off that of the Panamera Turbo. Then again, maybe the fact that Porsche can build a sedan that outpaces a 315 horsepower mid-engined roadster weighing in below 3,000 pounds is the more impressive fact. [via Motor Trend]
