Take Your First Look At The 2013 Viper

The art of the slow reveal.

The 2013 Dodge SRT Viper will make its triumphant debut at the New York Auto Show this spring, but in the meantime, we’ll have to make do with whatever teasers SRT feeds us. Like this one.

Released on Monday on SRT’s Facebook page, the first official picture of the new Viper gives the impression that the new car will bear a fair resemblance to the second-generation Viper. Of course, the lighting in the teaser is so dim, that could just be what SRT wants us to see. All we know for sure is the 2013 Viper has a bulging hood with a vaguely cobra-like air intake, and headlights with LED eyeliners.

What we don’t know is what exactly will lie under that hood when the car arrives. We happened to strike up a conversation recently with a source who claims to know some people inside the Dodge racing program, and our wishes-to-remain-anonymous source mentioned that he’d heard SRT wants to ape the Corvette business model and build a variety of different Viper models, from an entry-level car all the way up to a ZR1 competitor. He also mentioned a rumor that the 2013 Viper would also use a few different engines, with V8s and V10s all but guaranteed—and a V6 model possibly on the table.

We’ll know whether those rumors is true come April, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Viper follow in the Corvette’s footsteps by offering one body with several powertrain choices—it makes a lot of financial sense, even if it does seem a bit sacrilegious. But SRT, if you’re reading this, please keep any engine with less than eight cylinders far away from the Viper. [via SRT on Facebook]
