You Don't Need An SUV If You Have A Porsche 911 (w/Video)

Climbing hills off-road in an old-school Porsche.

We tend to think the only vehicles capable of going off-road are SUVs and trucks with four-wheel-drive systems and enough ground clearance to pass over a goat. But that ain't true at all. Fact is, as long as your car has enough traction and clearance to handle the terrain at hand, you could take anything off road.

Even, say, a Porsche 911.

One inventive Porsche owner decided to give it a shot, bringing his (or her) 911 to California's Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area and cutting loose on some of the steeper hills. As you might imagine, this is right around the time the people nearby who knew what they were looking at started taping.

And just to prove this isn't an anomaly, here's another sampling of the 911's native off-road prowess:

I would imagine a 911 makes a decent hill climb car. Physics is on it's side: it's rear-wheel-drive, and the engine is over the driven wheels in the back, so it's got a lot of traction going up a hill. Add in some ground clearance, a decent bit of power, and some knobbly tires, and why not? Aren't there a lot of Beetle hill climb cars for the same reason? Anyhow, cool video!

wow the power that 911 has to actually go over the hill is absolutely amazing.
