The Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S has been revealed in its production glory, but the enormous rumor mill that was built to traffic whispered reports and semiofficial/unofficial claims still needs to be fed. Enter the rumors about the next version of the car to roll down the line—a more powerful 86/BRZ/FR-S still unconfirmed, but so likely, you’d be an idiot to bet against it.
First up comes news from Toyota chief engineer and sports car coveter Tetsuya Tada, who tells Autocar that a forced-induction 86 is already being developed deep within the belly of Toyota Racing Dynamics. But instead of the traditional Japanese sports car choice of turbochargers, Toyota is planning on using a supercharger for their sports coupe.
Tada says he prefers the blower because it doesn’t change the throttle response as turbos can; besides, TRD already has plenty of experiencebuilding superchargers for everything from the Scion tC to the Toyota Tundra. The new forced-induction engine’s output is unknown, but Toyota has said the chassis could easily handle at least 50 more ponies than the current 197 horsepower output. We wouldn’t be surprised if a supercharged 86 made at least 250 hp.
The terms of forced induction could be where Subaru and Toyota split ways on their jointly-developed sports car, however. Subaru recently announced that the next-generation WRX would use a turbocharged version of the 2.0 liter boxer four shared between the many different Toyobaru varieties—and since they’re going to be building this engine already, it would seem pretty obvious to slot it into the BRZ as well. Might we be forced to choose between a 250 horsepower supercharged FR-S and a 270 horsepower BRZ in 2014 or so? It woudn’t be the worst choice to have to make. [via Autocar, Motor Trend]
