Remember how Ford was touting that the Mustang Boss 302 would come with a separate key designed to unlock the car’s full, less-idiot-proofed potential on the race track? Well, what they neglected to mention was that using said key would knock two years or 14,000 miles off your powertrain warranty.
If you, as a Boss 302 owner, choose to purchase the TracKey package that reprograms your Mustang and gives you the second key, your usual 5 year/50,000 mile warranty will be replaced with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty—starting at the date you purchased the car originally, not the date you installed the TracKey. This new, more limited warranty only applies “when the warranted Ford Racing Part is identified as the causal part of a warrantable concern,” however, so if the problem doesn’t lie with a piece touched by Ford Racing, the full five-year warranty should still apply.
Okay, we understand that anyone who chooses to purchase the TracKey will probably be banging on their Boss or Laguna Seca more frequently than regular Boss owners, and thus more likely to wear down the car more quickly. But seriously, only three years or 36,000 miles? Ford, do you want to see most of these incredible cars relegated to garage queens? [via Mustangs Daily]
