Infiniti Could Have Their Own GT-R...

...but CEO says they won't anytime soon.

Nissan and Infiniti share engines, platforms and technology the way Appalachian siblings share clothes, food and lovers, so it doesn’t seem like a stretch to imagine Infiniti building their own version of the R35 GT-R. But while it’s technically feasible, don’t expect to see a a GT-R wearing Infiniti’s…uh, what is the Infiniti logo supposed to be again? Mount Fuji? Well, don’t expect to see a GT-R wearing it anytime soon.

In an interview with CAR Magazine, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn gave a wonderful non-answer when pressed on whether Infiniti will get their own R35-based sports car. “Are we going to do that, I would say ‘no’, I don’t think so. If your question is ‘could we do that,’ I would say ‘yes,’” he said.

“The idea makes sense. The technology is here, the platform is here. It’s a great car, the GT-R. Is it a project now? No. But I don’t want to give you the impression we’ll never do that. But I don’t want you to think that it’s coming in the next two to three years either.”

That timeline means we probably shouldn’t expect to see an R35-based Infiniti sports car, unfortunately. (But hey, that’s why they have the Egoist edition GT-R.) However, rumor has it the next-generation GT-R may be a hybrid, a powertrain setup that’d be very much at home in Infiniti’s increasingly eco-friendly lineup. At least four years, though, huh? All right, we’ll wait. [via CAR]
