Call the skepticism brigade, because this rumor has us interested in adding our names to their roster. Supposedly, the “spectacular” surprise Porsche has prepared for the Detroit Auto Show is nothing less than a new mid-engined twin-turbo competitor for the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C.
Why are we so skeptical? Well, the 911 Turbo, 911 GT2 and 911 GT3 have overcome their ass-heavy handicap quite well by now, and have done a bang-up job defending Porsche’s honor in the entry-level supercar class over the last 35 years or so. Considering a new 600 horsepower sports car with a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V8 would manage to step on both the toes of the Turbo/GT2 family and the new 918 Spyder, we’re sticking this rumor in the “highly unlikely” category.
However, if Porsche does decide to build the 600 hp all-wheel-drive speed machine rendered above, we’ll be first in line to drive it. Even if it means we have to shove everyone else out of the way at its reported 2014 debut. [via Bild]
