Audi Gives U.S. Lineup a Kick In The RS

America to score additional high-performance cars.

Audi loyalists in the U.S. have usually received the short end of the stick when it comes to hardcore performance models. While Mercedes-Benz and BMW will gladly sell Americans AMG or M versions of nearly every model in their lineup, Audi buyers are stuck with S models that lack the extreme get-up-and-go the other German luxury car makers’ go-fast models offer. Okay, we briefly got the RS4 and RS6, but it seemed like they were only here about two seconds before they went back to being forbidden fruit.

Well all that’s about to change, according to Audi. Hot on the heels of the recent decisions to bring the TT RS and RS5 here, the company recently declared its intention to bring even more RS models to the States in the future. (Thank fewer differences in emissions regs and a more favorable exchange rate between the euro and the dollar.) They didn’t specify which models would be included in the deal, but the next-gen RS4 (which we may see next year) and RS6 would seem like obvious choices, given the obvious competitors from BMW and Mercedes.

However, the company also said they will not be slapping the RS badge on models willy-nilly; only models that can meet the criteria of “ultimate performance, driving dynamics, and what is technically possible” will make the cut. This means no Q7 RS (yay!)…but no RS8, either. Come on, Audi—we were really hoping for an A8 with the V12 from the new Lamborghini Murcielago-succeeding LB715-5…[via Motor Trend]
