McLaren's Five-Year Plan

The company answers that annoying career-counselor question.

After years of its parents, pals and girlfriends asking “What are you doing with your life?,” McLaren finally sat down and worked out a plan for the next five years. According to the company’s North American chief, Tony Joseph, the company aims to produce a new model or a new variant of an existing model every year for the next half-decade, with a goal of increasing total production to 4,500 units. Joseph said the company plans to sell about 1,000 MP4-12Cs in the car’s first year; that shouldn’t prove difficult, as the company had already tallied 2,700 officially interested rich folks before the car’s U.S. unveiling at Pebble Beach. If the company aims to sell around 1,000 examples of each volume model per year, a total production of 4,500 cars would give it room for three or four “volume” models (i.e. ones with four digit sales figures) and a couple of special editions. It seems possible the company’s products will continue to be analogous the Ferrari model lineup; we’re just spitballing, but convertible and hardcore Scuderia/Challenge-esque versions of the MP4-12C would seem likely. Beyond that, we can dream about a front-engined gran turismo to compete with the 599 GTB. [via Auto Guide]
