Ken Block on Gymkhana 3

Hate the music video? Blame it on Dyrdek.

What kinds of holdups did you get into in terms of getting the action parts shot?

The particular place we did it was only available for certain days and we had weather issues, there were a couple of technical issues with the car, so we were able to shoot one weekend in August and we didn’t get everything done that we wanted and the next weekend we were able to shoot was in September, actually very late August. So instead of the two videos coming out very close together, now because we didn’t shoot everything for the action bit as quick as we wanted, that’s what put this huge gap between the two videos. I realize people probably aren’t too happy that they’ve only seen the music video but I think once they’ve actually seen the action parts of it, that they’ll be very stoked.

Where did you shoot?

We shot in France. To give you the location would be to give away the concept of the video. We want the concept of the video to actually be a surprise. Basically with the Gymkhana series there’s only so much I can do with the car. I can’t kickflip the car. To do some more unique driving with the car I need to find more and more unique locations. I just have such high expectations that it took me eight months to figure out a location. In fact, I went really far down the path of working with other locations that I ended up getting turned down because these locations just didn’t like the stuff I wanted to do. So we ended up with this location in France, which turned out to be incredible. The general concept is taking the gymkhana car and going to really really unique places and being able to do stuff that normally hasn’t been done with a rally or gymkhana car before. Or really, any type of car.

Now, when you say you can’t kickflip a car, you’re talking skateboarding moves. And I saw your buddy Vaughn [Gittin Jr.] do a railslide in his Mustang. Do you have anything like that worked in?

Hmmm. Aaahhh. That’s a good question. The general answer to that question would be no. The stuff that he tried with the car was interesting and I think Vaughn had a good idea there, but I’m more into technical driving and what I can actually do with the car, than actually trying to bring in an obstacle like that and imitate something from a different sport.

Will there be a lot of lightbulbs in this one?

[laughs] There’s no lightbulbs.

What about fire?

Yes, there’s fire, but it’s only from my exhaust.

Paint?

Nope, no paint.

Babes?

Hmmm, nope. None of that either.

Have you given any thought to working in some showgirls in any of the future videos, just for visual entertainment’s sake?

[laughs] There’s not going to be in this video, but I actually have some in a different video I’m just shooting on. Definitely enjoy having the female aspect of any video I’m a part of. And we hope to work more of that in in the future.

But the general concept of Gymkhana 3 was… Everybody loved Gymkhana 1 and the simple rawness of it and a lot of people really enjoyed Gymkhana 2 because of the production values and unique shots. So when we concepted out what Gymkhana 3 would be I just said let’s take those two aspects and separate them. Let’s take this high production and make it as amazing as we can — and that where the music video came about — and then we also said okay we love the simple rawness of Gymkhana 1, how can we make that as gnarly as possible. So that’s what you’re about to see next week. You’re about to see Gymkhana 1, if I could make it any better and more raw, how would I do that? And that’s the concept.

I admire Ken for his bluntness and what he and DC is doing for motorsport, taking a more controversial approach usually seen in sports like skating, bmx, snowboarding etc. Professional drivers/riders tend to be quite silenced to what they want to say and how they feel because of their sponsors. It's cool 'cause holistically, motorsport has become quite dull(to those who not in the know) and this might just spark a whole new era of it. And I'm not just talking about Rally, hopefully it catches onto circuit racing too.

Much respect Ken, I was wondering all the same questions 0-60 asked! And I'm glad to hear that the upcoming video is going to continue to be technically satisfying :)
