Yes, the hairdos of the upper 0.0000001 percent are about to get a lot messier, thanks to Bugatti’s new car—the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Vitesse—which is French for “speed,” because people needed a reminder that they Veyron is fast—is the product of Bugatti hybridizing the Grand Sport and Super Sport strains of their supercar. From the Veyron Super Sport, the Vitesse receives the 1,200 horsepower, 1106 lb-ft version of Bugatti’s quad-turbo 8.0 liter W16 engine, along with the Super Sport’s front fascia and chassis alterations; from the Grand Sport, it gets the pop-off targa top and tall ovoid air intakes on the roof.

Bugatti hasn’t specified just how fast the Grand Sport Vitesse will go, but we’re gonna take a stab and say it’ll go 229 mph with the roof off (the same Vmax the regular Grand Sport will do sans chapeau), and 258 mph with the roof firmly locked in place (the same tire-limited top speed the Veyron Super Sport will reach). No word on price, but if you can afford it, up yours. [via Bugatti]

Press Release:

Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse celebrates world premiere in Geneva

Molsheim/France, 22 February 2012 – Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. is set to unveil the most powerful roadster of all time at the 82nd International Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March.

With an increase in power up to 1,200 HP, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has entered a new dimension of open-top driving. Optically aligned to the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which holds the current world speed record of 431 km/h, the Vitesse also impresses with its dynamic driving characteristics.

Bugatti’s engineers have developed the current Grand Sport, with its 1,001 HP and 1,250 Nm, into an even more powerful vehicle. The Vitesse’s maximum torque is now an impressive 1,500 Nm. The increased power of the new roadster’s 16-cylinder engine is made possible by the four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers. The chassis has also been modified to support the power increase.

The Vitesse therefore also ensures the supreme range of excellent features one would expect of a Bugatti super sports car, from precise driving dynamics to extraordinary acceleration and braking.

“The rapid success of the Super Sport convinced us to increase the performance of the Bugatti roadster. Once again our engineers worked hard to demonstrate that Bugatti is able to constantly redefine the boundaries of what is technically feasible,” reveals Bugatti President Wolfgang
Dürheimer. “We gave our all to transfer the achievements of the Super Sport over to the Grand Sport, thereby turning open-top driving itself into an extraordinary experience at high speed.”

Update: Mercedes-Benz saw fit to release a whole bunch of new images of the SL63 AMG since we first posted this story, so we’ve added them to the photo gallery above.

Since they had a nice chunk of the automotive media present in Spain for the unveiling of the new Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W03 race car, Mercedes-Benz decided to kill two birds with one stone and bring out the SL63 AMG, too.

Between running test laps in the W03 and quietly seething at each other, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher found a little time to show off the new SL63. Details were pretty scarce—we’ll likely learn more at, yup, the Geneva Motor Show next month—but Mercedes-Benz did reveal that the SL-Class’s version of AMG’s 5.5 liter twin turbo M157 V8 makes 529 horsepower. (If that’s just no enough, an AMG Development Package that boosts the horsepower higher is almost guaranteed.)

The new SL63 AMG is also 275 pounds lighter than the outgoing model; between the new engine (the old SL63 used the 6.2 liter naturally aspirated M156 V8), the reduced weight and a few other tweaks, the new SL63 gets 30 percent better gas mileage than the outgoing car.

As for the new Formula One car, Mercedes’s latest racer gets the ugly split nose that’s going around this season, and despite being constructed out of 200 additional parts when compared to last year’s car, it still ends up weighing less than the 2011 racer. Whether it’ll be enough to bring Nico and Schumi glory…that’s a wait-and-see question.

Press Release:

Mercedes-Benz this morning marked two world premieres at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, with the unveiling of the 2012 Silver Arrow, the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 W03, and the first public sneak preview of the brand-new Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG. The new high-performance roadster, which develops 537 PS while delivering weight savings of 125 kg and 30% improved fuel economy, was introduced by Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.

The new Silver Arrow, the F1 W03, has undergone an intensive programme of simulation testing at the team’s technical bases in Brackley and Brixworth. This was followed by a filming day limited to 100 kms at Silverstone on 16 February, and a private test day in Barcelona on 19 February, during which the car ran for 354 km. Michael and Nico shared driving duties on both days.

The new car concept is based on a largely stable set of technical regulations, which nevertheless include two significant changes: revision of the maximum bodywork height at the front of the car, which encouraged the distinctive stepped-nose design; and new restrictions concerning the positioning of the exhausts, designed to prevent the aerodynamic benefit gained from exhaust gases during 2011, the so-called ‘blown diffuser’.

The F1 W03 project was begun in May 2011 and is the first full car produced by a technical team that was strengthened last year with recruitments at every level of the organisation. The new car, which is composed of some 4500 parts compared to 4300 parts in 2011, has nevertheless achieved a lower core weight than its predecessor, is better packaged and more efficient. All mandatory FIA crash tests had been successfully completed at the first attempt by the end of the first week of January 2012.

“The F1 W03 is a car that I believe, and hope, our team can be proud of, and which will deliver the on-track results that everybody has worked so hard to achieve,” commented Team Principal Ross Brawn. “Notwithstanding the distinctive nose design, which is certainly an acquired taste, the F1 W03 is an elegant interpretation of the current regulations, and a clear step forward over its predecessor in terms of detail design and sophistication. Last year, we produced a very bold car and, although its more radical elements didn’t always deliver the results we had hoped for, the experience we gained has been invaluable to the design of the 2012 car. The F1 W03 is also a more integrated package, which reflects the ever-strengthening ties between our technical teams in Brackley and Brixworth, and demonstrates that our Silver Arrows works team is taking the next step forward in terms of on-track performance.”

Nico, who drove the first laps in the F1 W03 on 16 February in Silverstone, commented: “We have had a good start to our 2012 testing programme, and it was a great feeling to drive the first laps in the new F1 W03. The car looks good, and is very nicely packaged under the bodywork – all the parts are in harmony, which reflects how well the different departments of our team are working together. From the beginning of our running, we have been able to focus on understanding the car and making good progress with our test programme. It will be very interesting to learn more about where we stand in the next few weeks.”

Michael, who will complete the first full day of official testing with the new car today in Barcelona, commented: “I have done quite a few roll-outs and launches of new cars, but even after all these years, I must say it still feels special. Days like this are precious moments, as they are always filled with hope and anticipation. Already last week, when we were driving the F1 W03 for the very first time, it instantly gave us good feedback and sensations. Starting today, we will work intensively to make it a competitive runner. Obviously, we will only see over the next couple of weeks how big the step is that we have made, but I can say already that the guys and girls back in the factories at Brackley and Brixworth were brilliant in putting in so much effort, and we can only say a big thank you them. I know which reward they would like, and we will definitely try to deliver it. For my part, I am eager to fight again, looking forward to the new season, and I can’t wait for it to begin.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, concluded: “2012 will mark the third season for our Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows works team, which was introduced in January 2010, and our target is to take a step forward in on-track performance. A lot of work has been done throughout the last year, not just to design the new car but also to build a technical organisation that is capable of delivering to its full potential, with consistency. Our ultimate goal is to become regular race winners and championship contenders, and so to write another chapter of success in the story of the Silver Arrows which began 78 years ago. Our target this year is to take another step forward on that road.”

Following the car’s launch this morning, the F1 W03 will complete eight full days of pre-season testing over the next two weeks at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

The first teaser Dodge—er, SRT, damn it, we keep doing that—released of the 2013 Viper gave us a hint as to what the car’s front end will look like. This new teaser, however, clues us in as to what the car’s scoop will look like. But, uh, we’re not entirely sure where said scoop sits on the car.

Anyone want to take a stab at it? The shape in the top left corner reminds us of a subtle rear spoiler for some reason, but that doesn’t really fit with the rest of car. It could be the new Viper’s exhaust pipe. It could be the 2013 Viper’s version of the Viper’s enormous heat vent between the door and the front wheel. Hell, it could just be an extreme close-up of the cupholder.

We’re guessing SRT will keep feeding us teasers as we move closer to the 2013 Viper’s debut at the New York Auto Show in April. Until they send us a new picture to puzzle over, though, we’ll be scratching our heads about this one. [via SRT on Facebook]

You might have forgotten about the Aston Martin V12 Zagato in the eight months since it raced in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Well, Aston Martin can’t have that, so they’ve released some pictures and video of their Vantage-based bespoke-bodied sports car. Yum.

Built using methods, materials and facilities originally designed for the One-77, Aston plans to build up to (but not more than) 150 V12 Zagatos, each of which will take more than 2,000 hours of work to build. Handbuilt aluminum and carbon fiber bodywork, skilled manual assembly and Zagato design don’t come cheap, though; each V12 Zagato will sell for £330,000 ($517,000) before the tax man has his say.

Still, if you’ve got half a million to burn and demand maximum exclusivity for your 12-cylinder-sports-car-buying dollar, the Aston Martin V12 Zagato’s a hard card to beat. Deliveries start this fall, so place your order now, you wealthy bastards.

Press Release:

The New Aston Martin V12 Zagato

9 February 2012, Gaydon: With the final design signed-off and engineering development work progressing apace, Aston Martin today reveals the first images of the new V12 Zagato (road car) scheduled for production later this year.

The V12 Zagato is the pinnacle of the Vantage range. It is also the latest expression of a successful creative collaboration that has given rise to a series of striking GT cars over the last half-century, the original and most iconic of which being the DB4GT Zagato. Not only does this masterpiece rank amongst the most desirable, collectable and valuable cars in history, its 50th anniversary provided the inspiration for the V12 Zagato.

Though commemorating a great Aston Martin of the past the V12 Zagato could be no mere pastiche of the original. Instead the project was seen as the perfect opportunity to take Aston Martin’s ethos of technology and tradition to a new and exciting level. To this end the V12 Zagato combines the modern ideas, materials, processes and technology pioneered on One-77, while remaining true to the purity and craftsmanship of its illustrious forebear.

For Aston Martin’s CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez, the V12 Zagato is “a celebration of both Aston Martin’s heritage and its future”. He continues: “Our relationship with Zagato stretches back more than 50 years. Together in that time we have created a series of very special cars. The first – the DB4GT Zagato – is a true icon: fast, beautiful and incredibly desirable. In the V12 Zagato I believe we have captured the spirit of that car and combined it with a confident twist of modernity to give it a character all of its own.”

Initial design concepts for the V12 Zagato were explored in early 2010. Inspired by Zagato’s bold and individual styling signatures Aston Martin’s Director of Design, Marek Reichman, and his Gaydon-based design team relished the challenge of shaping the V12 Zagato, creating a car that pushes the boundaries of Aston Martin’s design language, yet pays tribute to the DB4GT Zagato. Demonstrating Aston Martin’s ability to rapidly bring ideas to fruition the Zagato programme quickly gained momentum, the design team working hand-in-hand with engineers and artisans to complete the build of a pair of concept cars in the spring of 2011.

May 2011 saw the V12 Zagato make its world debut at the prestigious Villa d’Este concours. Entered in the Concept Cars and Prototypes class, the V12 Zagato wowed the judges and the crowd, taking first place against impressive opposition. In June the Villa d’Este winner – along with the second prototype car – made the V12 Zagato’s world racing debut at the gruelling 24 hour endurance race held at the Nürburgring. Both cars completed the ultimate durability test, continuing Aston Martin’s 100 per cent finishing record in this notoriously tough race.

After an overwhelmingly positive response from customers, the decision was made in July 2011 to build a strictly limited run of V12 Zagatos. Since then, Aston Martin’s design team have worked to refine the sports car’s detailing and aerodynamic performance while staying faithful to the original design concept. At the same time engineers based at Gaydon have been putting prototypes through the company’s rigorous development programme to ensure the V12 Zagato performs as well as it looks.

Every Aston Martin is a unique combination of advanced materials, technology and time-honoured craftsmanship. The V12 Zagato takes this philosophy to a level previously seen in the company’s exquisite One-77 supercar, which completes its build run this year. Built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, production of the V12 Zagato will be strictly limited to no more than 150 cars.

Creating each V12 Zagato is a painstaking process that takes approximately 2,000 man-hours to complete. Just like the One-77, the V12 Zagato is constructed from a combination of hand crafted aluminium and carbon fibre. The bonnet, signature ‘double-bubble’ roof and doors are hand-crafted aluminium, while the front and rear fenders, door sills and boot lid surround are made from carbon fibre.

The finished body is then painted in the same dedicated area as the One-77. Four unique colours have been created for the V12 Zagato: Scintilla Silver, Alloro Green, Alba Blue and Diavolo Red. The painting process alone takes some 100 hours to complete and is followed by the marriage of the body and the drivetrain within the sports car production area. From there the V12 Zagato is transferred to the standalone facility originally built to house One-77 production, where the build is completed.

This serene, laboratory-like space is perfectly suited to the task of creating special cars such as the V12 Zagato. It is here that time is lavished upon the fitment and installation of an array of bespoke components, including the side glass and the distinctive rear window, which features a curved surface that continues the sculptural lines of the ‘double-bubble’ roof. All the exterior brightwork around the windows has a contemporary black finish to compliment the exposed carbon fibre components. Fitment of the hand-crafted interior and upholstery is also completed in this dedicated build area.

Like all Aston Martins when viewed as a whole the V12 Zagato is an artful composition of powerful lines and compelling proportions, but when viewed up close it reveals sophisticated, sculptural surfaces and jewel-like details. The exposed elements of carbon fibre on the front splitter, A-pillars, rear lamp pods, diffuser, door mirror cases and rear wing all display the same perfectly symmetrical weave and smooth resin finish. Likewise the bold new grille is formed in a unique three-dimensional composite material mesh that echoes Zagato’s famous ‘Z’ moniker.

More delights are found inside. Seven Bridge of Weir hides – in semi-aniline finish to offer durability while preserving the natural texture of the leather – are used to trim the V12 Zagato’s interior. Hand-stitched quilting of a unique design creates a flowing pattern that evokes a dynamic sense of movement across the seats and headlining, while ‘Z’ embroidery in the headrests and rear parcel shelf add a further flourish. Satin-finish carbon fibre on the dashboard and centre stack is perfectly complimented by piano black accents and satin black rotary switchgear. Carbon fibre sill plaques with ’V12 Zagato’ inlaid metal script provide a distinctive finishing touch.

A work of art built by skilled craftsmen to be driven and enjoyed by the world’s most discerning car collectors, the V12 Zagato is a fitting tribute to its illustrious ancestor. On-sale now priced at £330,000 (plus local taxes) the production specification V12 Zagato will be showcased at the Geneva Salon International in March 2012. First deliveries are scheduled for Autumn 2012.

Ferrari’s replacement for the 599 GTB is almost guaranteed to be one of the biggest stories out of the Geneva Motor Show next month—considering it’s expected to pack a 700 horsepower V12 yet be smaller and lighter than its predecessor, it’s not hard to see why—but the Prancing Horse is also bringing a revised version of the California to the really big Swiss show.

Unlike the carefully-guarded 599 replacement, though, Ferrari is more than happy to discuss the new Cali well in advance of its motor show appearance. New exhaust manifolds and engine mapping bump power to 483 horsepower and 372 lb-ft of torque, and give the car a flatter torque curve. Simultaneously, Ferrari managed to shave 66 pounds off the car; Ferrari claims the combination of virtues sends the new California from 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds.

If there’s been one main criticism of the California, it’s that the car is too Beverly Hills and not enough Stelvio Pass—more cruiser than sports car. In hopes of shutting those critics up once and for all, Ferrari is also giving the California a new Handling Speciale package. The HS pack teams Ferrari’s magnetorheological dampers, stiffer springs and a 10 percent quicker steering box, all of which combined will still not earn you any street cred with Gallardo drivers. But you’ll be having fun, so who cares?

The updated California is already being built in Maranello, with initial deliveries headed to Europe. Between this, the new SL63 AMG supposedly headed to Geneva, and the Bentley Continental GTC V8, it’s an even better time than usual to be shopping for a front-engined convertible GT. [via Ferrari]

Press Release:

Geneva debut for lighter, more powerful Ferrari California with new “handling speciale” package

Maranello, 15 February – The Geneva Motor Show will see the official debut of the new version of the Ferrari California, production of which has already commenced, with a reduction of weight of 30 kg and an increase in power output of 30 CV.

The Ferrari California’s GDI V8 now delivers 490 hp with maximum torque of 505 Nm at 5,000 rpm, thanks to new exhaust manifolds and engine mapping. The torque curve has also been modified and is higher across the engine’s generous rev range.

Cutting-edge aluminium fabrication techniques and construction technologies used by the Scaglietti Centre of Excellence in the manufacture of the Ferrari California’s chassis, have led to an overall reduction of 30 kg in the car’s weight without impinging in any way on its structural rigidity and performance.

These enhancements have improved the Ferrari’s California’s performance, reducing its 0-100 km/acceleration time to 3.8 seconds. This heightens its sporty feel without detracting from the mission and character of a car that has won universal acclaim for its performance and exceptional versatility resulting from its retractable hard top and 2+ seating. To meet the needs of clients desiring a more dynamic, yet not overly extreme, driving experience, an optional Handling Speciale package has been developed which encompasses modifications to the suspension set-up that minimise body roll and make the car even more responsive to driver inputs.

The Handling Speciale package includes Magnetorheological dampers controlled by an even faster ECU (-50% response time) running patented Ferrari software. The package also features stiffer springs for more precise body control combined with a comfortable ride. Lastly, the California benefits from faster turn-in with smaller steering wheel angles thanks to a new steering box with a 10 per cent quicker steering ratio.

All these new features combine to underscore the California’s sporty prowess without affecting its high-performance grand touring vocation – an achievement very much in line with Ferrari’s DNA.

The technical features are matched by a new, even more extensive choice of colours developed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, including two-tone finishes, three-layer paint technology and modern re-interpretations of classic colour schemes which increase the exclusive personalisation possibilities even further. In addition, the Ferrari California benefits from the free seven-year standard maintenance programme.

The availability of the lighter and more powerful vehicle, along with the optional Handling Speciale package, varies according to each market with first deliveries scheduled for Europe.

<del datetime="2012-02-15T17:36:30+00:00">Dodge</del> SRT first showed off the snake logo that’ll adorn the hood of the fifth-generation Viper back in 2010, but now we’ve learned Chrysler has given the new logo its very own name: “Stryker.” Clearly, they never read many X-Men comics.

The new logo is the third in the Viper’s history, following the original emblem from 1992-2002 (which we now know was named “Sneaky Pete”) and the 2003-2010 logo (nicknamed “Fangs”). Stryker designer Vince Galante admitted he was inspired by his childhood love of “Thundercats” and other 1980s-era cartoons, which is something you certainly never heard from Enzo Ferrari.

We’re a hell of a lot more excited for the car the Stryker will sit on than the logo itself, but now that Galante mentioned it, we do get a certain Saturday-morning-cartoon vibe from the new hood ornament. Considering the Viper has always been kind of a fantasy-made-real, that seems oddly appropriate. [via Drive SRT]

A medium-sized sports wagon equipped with a 450 horsepower naturally aspirated V8 and all-wheel-drive sounds like the sort of daily driver we beg God for every Sunday, so Audi’s new RS4 Avant seems like the answer to our prayers…except for the fact that it doesn’t seem the car maker is bringing it to the U.S. Maybe it’d help if we actually went to church.

The new RS4 comes in Avant (wagon) only, packing a single powertrain—the 4.2 liter V8 from the RS5, cranking out 450 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. All that juice is routed to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox—sorry, kids, no stick shifts here. A crown-gear center diff can route as much as 70 percent of the powah to the front wheels or 85 percent to the rear axle, while a torque-vectoring system brakes the inside wheel if it senses slippage. True enthusiasts will want the optional sport diff for the rear axle, though.

In fact, Audi left plenty of performance options available to order: ceramic brakes, sport suspension with dynamic ride control, variable steering, 20″ wheels with 265/30 tires, bucket seats (also optional: “luxurious, climate-controlled deluxe seats with a ventilation function”), and an option to junk the governor (just like California, ZING!) and raise the top speed from 155 to 174 mph.

The new RS4 Avant will go on sale in Germany this fall at a price of €76,600, which works out to just over $100K at current exchange rates. Sounds like a lot, until you realize the $47,300 Audi S4 sedan starts at €54,900 in Germany. If and when Audi ever changes their mind and brings the RS4 Avant Stateside, we bet they’ll just knock that goofy euro symbol off the price and stick a dollar sign there instead. At least, that’s what we’ll pray for. [via Audi]

Press Release:

The Audi RS 4 Avant

V8 powerplant with 450 hp, 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft)
High-performance brakes with wave discs
Unique combination of dynamics and everyday practicality

A modern classic from Audi is making a comeback: The third-generation RS 4 Avant combines potent performance with a high level of everyday practicality. It’s 4.2-liter V8 produces 331 kW (450 hp); the seven-speed S tronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive transfer that power to the road.

The Audi RS 4 Avant uses the same high-revving, normally aspirated V8 engine that powers the RS 5 Coupe. The 4,163 cc powerplant produces 331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm for a specific output of 108.1 hp per liter. Its maximum torque of 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) is available from 4,000 to 6,000 rpm. The responsive V8 with its red-painted cylinder head covers accelerates the RS 4 Avant from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.7 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). This can be increased to 280 km/h (173.98 mph) upon request.

Hand-built at Audi’s plant in Györ, Hungary, the 4.2 FSI engine combines its impressive power with exemplary efficiency, consuming on average less than 11 liters of fuel per 100 km (21.38 U.S. mpg).

With its high efficiency and long top gear, the standard seven-speed S tronic also contributes to the vehicle’s good fuel economy. Drivers can let the lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission shift automatically or change gears manually using the selector lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. For explosive starts, drivers can also activate Launch Control, which manages the engagement of the clutch at an optimum starting speed and minimum wheel slip.

Top traction: quattro drive with crown-gear center differential
Like every RS model from Audi, the RS 4 Avant comes standard with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The heart of this system is the crown-gear center differential. This compact and lightweight component can vary the distribution of power between the front and rear axles immediately, smoothly and over a wide range, with up to 70 percent flowing to the front or as much as 85 percent to the rear. The default 40:60 ratio of the rear-biased configuration ensures sporty handling.

The self-locking crown-gear center differential works together with the torque vectoring system, which acts on all four wheels. If the load on the inside wheel is reduced too much while the car is being driven dynamically, the torque vectoring system brakes it slightly before unintended slip can occur. Audi offers the sport differential, which uses two superposition stages to actively distribute the power between the rear wheels, as an option.

Aluminum in abundance: the chassis
The chassis of the Audi RS 4 Avant is a very complex design. Many components of the five-link front suspension and the self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum. The new speed-dependent power steering is a highly efficient electromechanical system with a direct steering ratio for highly precise road feel. It helps the driver stay on course by making slight steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different amounts of grip.

The taut RS setup lowers the body by 20 millimeters (0.79 in) compared with the Audi A4 Avant. New, polished 19-inch, ten-spoke forged aluminum wheels shod with 265/35-series tires are standard. Audi also offers 20-inch wheels with 265/30-series tires. These are available in a new, polished, titanium-look, five-V-spoke design plus two additional variants in the five-arm rotor design.

Mounted behind the large wheels are internally vented wave disc brakes measuring 365 millimeters (14.37 in) in diameter up front. The steel friction rings with their wave-like outer contour are perforated and connected to the aluminum brake caps via pins. This concept reduces tensions, quickly dissipates heat and prevents transmission of temperature peaks. The new shape of the friction rings shaves a total of roughly three kilograms (6.61 lb) off the unsprung weight.

The calipers are painted high-gloss black; the front calipers have eight pistons each and sport RS logos. The ESP stabilization system has a Sport mode and can be fully deactivated. For the front axle, Audi offers the option of 380 millimeter (14.96 in) carbon fiber ceramic discs and six-piston calipers in anthracite gray. The ceramic brakes are especially lightweight, robust and durable.

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system is among the standard equipment for the RS 4 Avant. With it, the driver can switch between three modes – comfort, auto and dynamic – to determine the characteristics of the steering, the seven-speed S tronic and the throttle valve. Audi drive select can even vary the sound of the exhaust system, double-declutching when downshifting in dynamic mode. If the car is equipped with an Audi navigation system, a largely driver-configurable custom mode is also available.

In addition to the sport differential, another component available for Audi drive select is dynamic steering. It varies its steering ratio by nearly 100 percent depending on the speed driven and automatically countersteers slightly at the cornering limit for even more precise and stable handling.

Another particularly dynamic damping technology available as an option from Audi is the sport suspension plus with dynamic ride control (DRC). Oil lines and a central valve connect diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers. During fast cornering, the system boosts the stabilization of the front outside wheel, for example.

The damping characteristic of the sport suspension plus is variable, with a choice of three settings available via Audi drive select.

Athletic: the exterior design
The exterior design flaunts the athletic character of the RS 4 Avant. The hexagonal single-frame grille is set in a frame with a matte aluminum-look finish; its honeycomb insert is finished in high-gloss anthracite. LED daytime running lights encircle the xenon plus units like a clasp in the wedge-shaped headlights. The air flows through large openings divided by crossbars and embedded in a distinctive bumper featuring a splitter edge like on a race car.

When viewed from the side, the chiseled side sill caps and flared wheel wells catch the eye. The flared rear side elements with sharp horizontal upper edges are a nod to that all-wheel drive pioneer from 1980, the Audi quattro. The side mirror housings and trim strips have a matte aluminum-look finish, and a discrete roof spoiler at the back ensures the necessary downforce.

The distinctive bumpers and the two oval tailpipe caps of the dual exhaust system dominate the rear end and are integrated into an upturned diffuser. Audi also offers a sport exhaust system with a voluminous sound and black caps. Elegant light strips adorn the LED rear lights.

The Audi RS 4 Avant is 20 millimeters (0.79 in) longer and 24 millimeters (0.94 in) wider than the A4 Avant, but 20 millimeters (0.79 in) lower. A choice of eight colors is available: one solid and one metallic finish, four pearl-effect colors and the two specially pigmented crystal-effect colors, Prism Silver and Panther Black. The extensively clad underbody integrates air vents for the seven-speed S tronic and the front brakes.

Sporty black: the interior
The interior of the RS 4 Avant is clad completely in black, with the exception of the roofliner, which is optionally available in Moon Silver. Chrome clasps subtly accentuate switches and control elements. Carbon inlays are standard, with brushed matte aluminum, Aluminum Race, black piano finish or a light stainless steel mesh available as options.

The standard heated front sport seats with integrated headrests are power adjustable and covered in a combination of black leather and Alcantara. Fine Nappa leather in either Black or Moon Silver accentuated with Stone Gray piping is optionally available. Other options include bucket seats or luxurious, climate-controlled deluxe seats with a ventilation function. The thick ring of the leather multifunction sport steering wheel is flattened at the bottom, and the shift paddles mounted on the back of it sport an aluminum-look finish.

The driver information system with color display includes an RS menu with a lap timer and an oil thermometer. Both it and the MMI monitor display a special RS welcome screen when the car is started.

The instrument cluster bezel shines with a piano finish, and the design of the selector knob of the seven-speed S tronic is unique to the RS. Typical of all RS vehicles, the door openers are two delicate bars. The pedals, the footrest, the air vents, the shift paddles on the steering wheel, the MMI buttons and other controls shine in an aluminum-look finish. Aluminum inserts adorn the door sill trims, which are accentuated with RS 4 badges.

Audi offers exclusive high-grade leather packages for all seating options, including a design package with honeycomb quilting for the RS 4 bucket seats. Rounding out the list of optional equipment is a broad range of state-of-the-art driver assistance and communication systems, including the Bluetooth online car phone that connects the RS 4 Avant with the Internet.

Options for the luggage compartment, which offers up to 1,430 liters (50.50 cu ft) of cargo space, include a rail system with load securing set and a power hatch.

Delivery of the Audi RS 4 Avant is scheduled to begin in fall 2012 at a base price of €76,600 in Germany.

Infiniti has been teasing the sports car concept they’ll be introducing at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show for months now, but we’re gonna guess they didn’t intend for these images of the EMERG-E, as they’re calling it, to sneak out just yet.

Discovered hiding in a patent filing, these computer-generated models offer a revealing look at the electric-powered sports car with a range-extending internal combustion engine hiding behind the passenger compartment. We don’t know much beyond that, but based on these patent drawings, we’re into it.

Infiniti hasn’t mentioned whether or not they plan on building something like the EMERG-E (last we heard, they were still thinking about making their own GT-R by 2017 or so), but Honda’s decision to revive the NSX as a mid-engined hybrid probably has Nissan executives wondering if they should get in on that sweet, sweet action. At least, somebody seems to think it’s sweet. [via Car and Driver]

See, part of us wants to love it because it’s a sleek sport-utility with super-distinctive gullwing doors. They claim that it rips from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, too. 4.4 seconds! That’s stupid-fast AMG territory. How could we not love it?

Well, because it’s entirely electric. The only gas the Model X will ever encounter will be the farts blasted into its seats. No throaty roar of an internal combustion engine, no transmission to bang through gears, and no tailpipe to vent steam like wisps of cigarette smoke from Sophia Loren’s lips.

Worst of all, based on Tesla’s estimates for the Model S sedan with which the Model X shares a battery pack, it’ll probably take between six and eight hours to charge the battery on a 240V charger—pretty much gutting any usefulness outside of a 150 mile radius from your house. As a real car—one you can drive and drive and drive as long as the road goes on—it fails miserably.

Well, the Model X doesn’t hit the road until 2014, so we’ve got some time to decide. Maybe driving the damn thing will help us make up our minds. [via Tesla]

Photography: Jeremy Cliff

The Chicago Auto Show hosts a lot less new model debuts and makes less news than its Los Angeles, Detroit and New York doppelgangers, but a nice side effect of those lowered expectations is that there tend to be fewer yahoos wandering the floor and blocking our photographer’s lens. Good luck catching a clear glimpse of the Cadillac Ciel concept or a McLaren MP4-12C at the L.A. show, but in Chicago? The only thing crowding your shot is air.

Or maybe Midwesterners are just really polite, and they move out of the way when they see a camera pop up. Either way, check out the shots—they’re some of the clearest pix you’ll find of this year’s auto show stars.
