1939: WWII, Belgrade Grand Prix

This day in motoring history.

Seventy years ago today Britain and France declared war on Germany in reaction to Hitler invading Poland…and Nuvolari wins the only (and his last) Grand Prix held in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The field of competitors racing at the 1.7 mile street circuit included the Italian Nuvolari racing for Auto Union, a handful of Nazi Benzes, Maseratis and Auto Unions. Seventy five thousand people were said to have attended the race.
