Can-Am cars were to circuit racing in the 60′s and 70′s as Group B was to rallying. These were no compromise, high power monsters that took real men to drive – sometimes making up to 1500 horsepower for qualifying. The series ran until 1974 when costs, power, and the price of oil skyrocketed, bringing an end to the madness.
One of these cars was the McLaren M6B, originally driven by owner Bruce McLaren to victory in 1968. Weighing in at around 1600lbs with a Chevrolet v8 churning out 650 horses at the back, it was the evolution of a car that won the Can-Am series championship two years in a row.
Two years ago, Easy Street Motorsports driver Gary Sheehan got the rare chance to pilot a privately owned M6B around Infineon raceway. Enjoy the sounds and views of what it was like to drive one of these beasts.
