Block Vs. Loeb

Epic showdown, or not so much?

Sébastien Loeb does Gymkhana now? Here’s some recent footage of rally champion Loeb participating in a Red Bull sponsored gymkhanaesqe event down in Argentina over the weekend. We’ll keep our thoughts to ourselves for now, but it sure does seem like Loeb is following in the footsteps of a certain very popular video released by Ken Block not too long ago.

So what do you guys think, Loeb versus Block, who would come out on top?

i think block on tarmac, loeb on dirt

agreed above; loeb started out as a tarmac rally specialist, now he's king of all surfaces as his 8 wrc crowns attest.

I think Redbull needs to quit riding coat tails. Can't wait to see the new shiny overproduced version of this clip with Loeb looking into the camera and saying something kooky like "This is my world"... Ya gonna have to do better than that boys!

  • Warwick says:
    April 21, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Well, Gymkhana is nothing really that new...it's been done in Europe for half a century. I'm sure Loeb would hold his own against Ken, and vice versa :)

  • Jeff says:
    April 21, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Oh come on now, give the guy some credit. It was a demo/exhibition. Loeb was surely paid handsomely by Red Bull, "Hey, go tear up this course thingy and make every cheer." Loeb has ZERO NEED to remotely try to "follow" in the footsteps of Ken Block. I like KB and the Gymkhana video as much as the next guy, and am far from a fanboy of anyone ... but Loeb vs. Block? That's a serious question? Stop hating (which you as much indicated passively).

  • Malcolm smith says:
    April 21, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Let`s see... Loeb = French Rally Champion. Junior World Rally champion. 5 time World Rally Champion. Most successful rally driver in history. Only non Scandinavian to win the Swedish Rally. Block = Decent driver that likes to jump things with a rally car. To compare the two is like comparing Apples and Peanuts. No ofense to Block, but there are probably 200 under-funded drivers in Finland alone that can teach him a thing or two. Loeb is a Rally champion, Block is a performer.

  • AC says:
    April 21, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Ah... Does Block get to keep his hollywood photography and editing? BTW that type of Rally car exhibition has been going on long before Ken Block.

  • Lew Man says:
    April 21, 2009 at 10:15 pm

@Malcolm smith.... 100% agreed. Sorry but Mr Block needs to do a bit more than have success in America before he can be compared to Loeb. Only the biggest of Block fanboys could entertain the idea. And even then, if they are serious fans of motorsport, they would see that Block doesn't stand a chance of finishing anywhere near Loeb over the course of a full WRC event. Yep, someone must have been really bored to come up with this comparison.

  • Jason says:
    April 21, 2009 at 10:46 pm

I think Jeff made some good points, but all this hating on Ken Block is just ridiculous. KB is simply passionate about the sport he participates in. For him to make a video (however edited and staged as it may be) to promote his race discipline of choice is awesome. I'm pretty sure its a success its almost up to 5 million views. There's no need to belittle him, he's done more for rally than most professional drivers do for there sport.

  • wankervision says:
    April 22, 2009 at 1:23 am

Block is a wanker, like a complete ass of a wanker. Jacking off in public like a godamn monkey. Loeb, a world champ, not even worth a a thought. just look at Blocks "pwrc" attempts, what a tourist!!!! wanker, soon his ching will be gone and with it, him

  • Jeff says:

    Jason: Agreed.

Very cool. Nice to see Ken mentioned in an article along with Sebastien. As others stated - this is just a demo in the street - with a car not set up for gymkhana. Comparing the two posted videos . . . Ken hands down. If they were both in equal cars doing proper gymkhana - I think Ken could hold his own. No question. Ken needs to add a jump to his next gymkhana day!

Why does Ken Block always make such a stupid face in pictures? EXTREME!!!!!!

  • gplsek says:

tough to compare, Loeb is in a restricted WRCar where Ken is driving a wide open Sube, they are both impressive and great driving by both drivers. -gp

  • Steve says:
    April 27, 2009 at 10:45 am

As has already been said I think thats a pretty unfair comparison. Loeb is a multiple national and international rally champion, Block has been rallying for about 5 minutes. Block can definately drive, but he's not in the same league as Loeb. Rally and performance car demonstrations have been happening in Europe for years (check out UK Driver Terry Grant), Blocks video just upped the budget and production of such demonstrations. Oh, and as much as I love the Gymkhana video, Loebs demo there was filmed in ONE TAKE with NO EDITING in a car with over 200 BHP less than Blocks Gymkhana car. Go figure.

  • stephen allison says:
    April 28, 2009 at 1:13 pm

loeb is by far better than block, the gymkhana practice was attended over a number of times and edited to look like if it was just one take. he's really not a good rally driver if he needs 500 brake at the road wheels to over steer a vehicle.

  • stephen-c says:
    May 9, 2009 at 12:21 pm

bobbylite u ar a retard to say block is better on tarmac then loeb. do you follow wrc at all? loeb is unbeateble on tarmac and gravel and snow. search you tube for [wrc ireland loeb c4 class]. it is unreal driving. ken block is a stunt driver. one thing that really pises me off is americans with big egos.

  • Evisu Johnston says:

KB was doing some pretty impressive ish

  • Jeff says:
    May 20, 2009 at 8:31 am

stephen-c : Ken Block is not a "stunt" driver. Please do more research. And you don't know what kind of ego he has or not. In interviews, the guy is very humble and down to earth. I don't think I've EVER heard him say a SINGLE bad thing about anyone else, and I don't think I've ever heard him boast of himself. It's a shame you'll likely never see this comment, too, and will continue armchair stereotyping Americans for some reason.

  • sheri says:
    May 31, 2009 at 1:34 pm

i am relatively new to paying attention to this, but Ken Block does drive professionally unless you consider Rally-America to not be professional... I enjoyed both these videos, while I know that Ken's is edited, it is absolutely a more impressive video, especially if you don't know what to look for (to catch editing glitches). It is aggravating that so many people are knocking him, because he is doing something great for the sport, by making people know about it in America, which Loeb is also doing as well in other countries.

as long as the events are given the right parameters to keep it fair--this would be an interesting challenge.

i wonder if block's car was an rwd conversion or was it the awd stock? what about the Citroen ,same question..

  • shaft says:
    July 14, 2009 at 9:44 am

Loeb owns all. If Block wants to compete with the big boys, he needs to step up to WRC. Until then he will only be known for throwing money at doing donuts in parking lots and on runways, and a lackluster stateside rally career.

  • Eric says:
    July 16, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Loeb. That's a capital Watch WRC events from the past couple years and you'll see that the guy is simple amazing. Very few mistakes and he just dominates. If Ken was anywhere near as good he'd be in a WRC drive. He's certainly got he $$$ to get himself in there. Not taking anything away from Ken Block but what he does and what Loeb does are two entirely different things. Granted, Ken Block does do Rally America but I have a funny feeling that it's not the same caliber as WRC. I'd love to be proven wrong though :-)

Block for Gymkhana. However - Solberg would kill them both! Video for reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmy3AXqhILI Who needs a heavily modified car when Solberg gets it done in a stock STI :3

Loeb is a amazing and talented driver. But like everyone else say. The 2 do not compare. I enjoy watching both get their work done, cause they both have different drving styles. Loeb obviously has experience out the ass, but block has come very far in such a little time. Block can entertain and thats what he wants to do. If I had to choose though it would be block..I find he is more aggressive, and precise! also he drives a 500 hp crawford performance subaru..wtf a citroen..(kidding)

I think that the DC team are exremely good at their marketing and this is just one viral video that they have done for many sports that they cover....remember the DC hoops commerical. along with many others, Ken Block is talented, but DC have just hyped it up to the max

  • delroguy says:

Loeb is sloppy compared to Block. Block puts his car where he wants it, Loeb throws it in there but not gracefully or on the x.

Well ! I'm french and I love Loeb but I also recognize that Block is a real good pilot. It has been said a lot there, but those two champions can't be compared easily for an only and simple reason : they do not practice the same sport. I fuck american people who say that europeans have such an ego BUT I also fuck europeans who say that american people do. It's not a competition ! "Bla bla bla, mine is tha best..." what a pity to read that... Anyway, Loeb and Block are the best in their "class" and no one of us will be able to drive as they do, so if I could suggest one thing : Shut Your Fuckin Mouth and just enjoy their videos. Salutations from Paris.

Block is awesome and I'm so stoked an American is showing at the WRC and is an awesome promoter of the sport here in the states, but Loeb is a six-time world champion and holds the record for most wins in the series and most - and tied second most - consecutive wins in a rally season with 6 & 5 (multiple times) respectively. Block just isn't there yet, but I'm rooting for him all the way!

Ken Block takes an entire day of shooting to produce what Loeb did in one take. same with the Tanner Foust video on Mullholland Dr. on take, one run, pure awesome. the Gymkhana videos are obviously a compilation of all the best segments from the whole day strung together to look like one run. tricky post-filming production editing vs real skill? i choose real skill.

  • Logan Tanner says:
    September 29, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I read the question as a showdown of Gymkhana skills not rally racing, in which case, I think Block has the advantage. I don't contest Loeb's superiority as a driver/racer/champion, but rally stage times and low speed, high RPM, 4 wheel drifts are very different things. I agree, as I think he would, that Ken Block is a performer first and rally driver second. Watching WRC this year it's clear the man is humble enough to know his own limits. He's be putting his money on Loeb too in almost anything other than a gymkhana showdown. That, he is good at. But my money is on Seb Ogier.

Well, X-games autocross gave us the answer... if it wasnt already clear. If good at showboating around, ken Block is no match for the 8 time in a row (!!) World Rally champion, points, podiums and finishes record holder that is Sebastien Loeb. Block tried WRC, scored (some) points, couldnt get close to Loeb. Loeb tryied Rallycross world champ, beats everyone. Comparing them is like comparing Senna and jeremy Clarkson... one puts on a good show, the other is the best ever.

  • Eng says:

Give a drift-car to Loeb and let see if he needs to do many tries before success in a Gymkhan as Block needs

Rofl-Lmao! ...Come on!.. put block to drive 1 (any) stage in gravelroad, or tarmac in streetrace ..not a MILE WIDE parking place LOOOOOOOL. its like bird vs seed ...sure americans will brag, let talks be talks, but in real tarmac streets and gravelroads with fences and cliffs its like comparing a rookie tricycle drives vs a hornet in speed and skill. ;)
