You’re looking at Audi’s first race car specifically developed for customer use and abuse. Right now it’s still in testing, but the official word is that it’ll be production based FIA GT3 spec, meaning it’s good for dozens of race series around the world.
“The R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sportscar and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up our first big customer sport programme,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. “Ever since the R8 was unveiled we’ve been inundated with enquiries about a race version. With the Audi R8 we will offer customers a racing sportscar equipped with high-calibre technology and the typical Audi qualities, but which is nevertheless easy to handle.”
Oh yeah, quattro. That’s gone. FIA GT3 regulations don’t allow it, so the R8 has been configured for RWD. What we hope for is that after its preliminary race season in 2009 (in Europe) that the car comes to ALMS to do battle against the M3, Porsche GT3 and F430.
You think? It's taken years of r and d for Porsche to be as dominant as they are in racing, look for audi to have something competitive in a few years.
Needs more wing.
Lugnut, while I agree that porsche has had years of experience in GT racing, Audi doesn't race to lose. They will throw enough R&D at it, along with money. So it will be interesting to say the least.
Here, here BS. This won't be a Spyker-like race effort.
so if i'm reading this correct, it will be available the same way you're able to purchase a gt3 cup car direct from porsche.... any specs??? hello, mr. scotto.
[...] Audi R8 GT3 V10 spotted in the wild with big fenders, bigger wing. At the end of the summer we mentioned Audi will be going up against Porsche in the 2009 FIA GT3 race series and possibly elsewhere, but at the time all we had were static shots of a press car. Yawn. What you see here is believed to be the test car for the GT3. We got the tip from Auto Motor Und Sport and below you can find the translation from their story on the car. [...]
