1938: 268 mph

This day in motoring history.

Seventy years ago today, Grand Prix racer Rudolf Caracciola hit 268 mph in Germany, the fastest ever speed recorded on a public road. He did it where else but on the autobahn going between Frankfurt and Darmstadt driving a Mercedes-Benz W125. Legend has it a man died the same day while attempting the record right after Rudolf’s run.
