Things that are ok to reuse

Toyota says engines should make the list.

In todays modern society, we’ve figured out that some things are ok to use more than once, while certain items, are not. Things that should not be reused are crashed helmets, toilet paper, ex-girlfriends, and according to most race teams in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, engines.

Typically, an engine is run for one race, and then a new one is installed for the next race. Toyota has changed that mentality slightly this season though. They’ve introduced a “used engine” program, where motors that have been broken in by racing once already, are installed for a second race. The only things done to prep the used motors for more racing are changing the valve springs, and dyno-testing the engines to make sure they’re still making the horsepower. So far, driver Johnny Benson has scored back-to-back victories this season, using previously raced motors. Other drivers have made podium finishes on motors that were on their third race.
The other advantage to this program, besides the success teams are having with broken in motors, is reduced operating costs for programs that don’t have as much sponsorship. Running the engines more than once, with just a light rebuild, is far more cost efficient, and is allowing some of the smaller teams to remain competitive.
